A dog in South Florida recently helped save her elderly owner after his wheelchair lost traction and slipped into a lake. In a “feel-good Friday” post, the Port St. Lucie Police Department recounted the dog’s heroics, which resulted in her 81-year-old owner’s life being saved.

The authorities explain what happened to the man, writing:

Mr. Smith took his dog for a walk near the lake in the 100-Blk of SW Twig Ave when his electric wheelchair lost traction, causing him to slide down the bank and flip off his wheelchair into lake

The man began to call for help as he struggled to keep his head above water. His dog, sensing that something was terribly wrong, began to bark. The barking alerted two people to the life-or-death situation. The authorities said:

The bystanders rushed over to the lake and flagged down PSLPD Officer Doty who was driving on Airoso Blvd.

Officer Doty exited his patrol vehicle and could see that Mr. Smith was submerged up to his neck. With the help of the two good Samaritans, Officer Doty was able to get Mr. Smith and his wheelchair out of the water and up the bank. After receiving medical care on-site, Mr. Smith was assisted back to his home by Officer Doty and a member of the St. Lucie County Fire District.

The authorities commended everyone involved in saving Mr. Smith’s life:

We are thankful for Mr. Smith’s dog and the 2 bystanders that helped save his life! And as the saying remains true…A man’s best friend is his dog. #FeelGoodFriday
