A desperate search is underway for a California man whose boat washed ashore north of Loreto, Mexico, last weekend. The catamaran, The Cat, drifted to shore with Bill Austin’s personal belongings and his dog, but he is nowhere to be found.
As reported by ABC News, Austin spent a few extra months in Mexico after participating in a sailboat race last fall. At the time that he disappeared, he was supposed to be sailing from San Carlos to La Paz..but he didn’t make it. Friends and family last heard from Austin a few days before his catamaran washed up on a beach.
The last people who spoke with Austin learned that the sea was rough due to high winds. But friends and family are hopeful that Austin, an experienced sailor, has found a safe beach on one of the islands in the area. His friend, Scott LaMay, said, “There’s several little islands and there’s definitely a lot of beach and coastline within the 20-mile radius that he could end up…,”
His daughter has been using social media to help organize searches and increase awareness about her father’s disappearance.
Hello, my dad Bill Austin was recently staying near San Carlos with his sail boat, The Cat. He left Guaymas for La Paz last Monday, and was last seen in Punta San Basilio on Wednesday. His boat was found today beached in Loreto (pictured). We’re looking for anyone who might have information, especially if you saw him, spoke to him, or saw his catamaran since Wednesday, March 9. Please message me if you have any information or know someone who might. Thank you for your help.
