Deer, geese and other birds may be “culled” to help save carnivores from starving to death at a zoo in Indonesia, reports Reuters. The Bandung zoo will be making some impossible decisions soon because of the financial difficulties created by the Covid-19 shut downs.
Zoo spokesman Sulhan Syafi’i tells the news agency:
We have around thirty dotted deer, and we have identified the old and unproductive ones (who can no longer breed) to be slaughtered to save the carnivores, such as the Sumatran tiger and Javan leopard.
The animals are already receiving a reduced amount of food, and soon, things will likely get worse. As it is, the zoo is relying on donations because visitors are no longer bringing the facility any funds.
A petition on Change.org cites ongoing issues at the zoo, even before the pandemic caused shut downs and financial loss. The petition states:
Sun Bears kept in the Bandung Zoo are so hungry they eat their own feces. One of the zoo’s giraffes suddenly died and was found to have 40 pounds of plastic trash in its stomach. The Bandung Zoo has been coined Indonesia’s “death zoo” and must be shut down immediately.
And claims that tourists often observe animals who appear to be emaciated.
