A suspected puppy mill operator has been arrested and is facing animal cruelty charges after dogs and puppies on his Belton, South Carolina, property were found living in squalor. As reported by WYFF News, 69-year-old Gary Gunnels is facing 12 counts of animal cruelty after the authorities discovered deplorable conditions at his suspected puppy mill operation.
Authorities responded to Gunnels’ property after receiving complaints from residents nearby – officers discovered dogs chained to trees in the yard, puppies locked on a porch, and young puppies in bathroom. None of the dogs had access to clean water or food and they were all “dirty.”
Conditions inside of Gunnels’ residence were filthy – officers found floors covered in urine and feces, as well as food and other household items. The authorities stated that the house was “unfit” for dogs or humans to live in.
The dogs and puppies seized from Gunnels were taken to PAWS Animal Shelter for care and treatment.
