Kenya’s only white giraffe and her baby calf were killed by poachers. The deaths of the two rare giraffes have been confirmed by members of the community and rangers of Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy.

According to a statement posted by the Ishaqbini Hirola Conservancy, the remains of the giraffes were in a skeletal state after the mother and her baby were killed by armed poachers. The calf had been the second birth recorded in August 2019 totaling three white giraffes in the country and perhaps the world.

“This is a very sad day for the community of Ijara and Kenya as a whole. We are the only community in the world who are custodians of the white giraffe. Its killing is a blow to tremendous steps taken by the community and a wakeup call for continued support to conservation efforts,” state Mohammed Ahmednoor, manager of the Conservancy.

“This is a long term loss given that genetics studies and research were significant investment into the area by researchers, has now gone to the drain. Further to this, the white giraffe was a big boost to tourism in this area.”

The white giraffe’s photo went viral in 2017 when she was discovered. Research scientists stated she was not albino, but the result of a condition known as leucism. Animals with this rare condition are still able to produce dark pigments resulting in the dark eyes of the animal.

Only a lonely bull giraffe remains.

Rest in peace mother and son.

What a sad day for wild animals and their right to exist peacefully in this world.
