One year after a Colorado dog was found shot and left by a dumpster, the killer or killers have still not been apprehended. Holly Fitterer-Thibault and her family have lived every pet owner’s nightmare when their dog Bishop went missing on December 28, 2018 in Elizabeth, Colorado.
The simple act of leaving a door unsecured led to the tragic consequences. At first, Holly’s daughter thought that Bishop had accompanied Holly to work which he often did. But, when Holly returned home, they realized that wasn’t the case.
In a phone interview with Holly, she stated Bishop, a six-year-old black and white dog was not one to run, so he could not have gone far.
The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office was contacted, and a report was made. The next step was to go door to door as well as put up flyers with Bishop’s photo and a reward offer for $500.
The community was very supportive in the search for Bishop and one man, a Good Samaritan went out searching on his own and even added money to increase the reward which is now at $6000.00. Sadly, there was no happy ending for Bishop and his family.
On February 16, 2019, just seven weeks after he went missing, Bishop’s body was found by a dumpster on the south end of CR21 near Holly’s home. The dog had been shot in the mouth possibly using a .45.
The strange thing is, whoever did this to Bishop, wanted his family to find his body considering he was left so near to the home. It was a freezing cold day, but the body was not completely frozen, so Bishop had not been left by the dumpster for very long when he was found.
In speaking to Holly, her theory on what may have happened to Bishop is that he got loose from the house, wandered to the end of the driveway (they live on 4 acres of property) and was picked up by someone who decided to keep him. Bishop, although not an aggressive dog was very assertive and super protective. He also loved kids.
Holly surmised whoever took Bishop did something to him that triggered him to react, and they shot him in retaliation. Although the police did a report, it’s still an unsolved mystery as to who killed Bishop.
No family should have to experience this, and no dog deserves to be shot and have his body dumped like garbage. Someone knows something and they need to come forward to allow Bishop’s family to have closure and know what happened to their beloved dog. It is the right and just thing to do.
