An elderly dog, 15 years of age, was rescued from a sewer in Dellwood, Missouri, on Monday night. According to Fox 2 News, the blind and deaf dog was saved thanks to the efforts of officers with the North County Police Cooperative.
Rescuing dogs from the sewer might not fall in the typical range of job descriptions for a police officer, but when Officer Lekamp learned about Miss Daisy Mae’s predicament, there was no question that help would be provided.
Officer Lekamp told the news agency:
“I grew up around dogs,and I’ve been in those desperate situations,and I could tell you they were both extremely upset. They were both crying,”
Miss Daisy Mae had wandered out of Michael and Sharon McClintock’s home while they were having work done on their floors – a door had been left open for the workers, and the elderly dog simply meandered away. Mr. McClintock feared the worst:
“My stomach turned. I thought she was a goner. I thought she probably fell down on her head and broke her head or broke her head. Just down there dead,”
Officer Lekamp, with the help of Corporal Jost, set out to find the wayward dog. It took some sleuthing to find out where she went and then the pair began working to retrieve her from a tunnel.
Officer Jost said:
Unfortunately, I had to lay down completely flat inside the mud and whatever else was down there. We were able to find the dog 14 feet in and hook the dog and put the dog out.”
When Daisy Mae was finally freed, her owner burst into tears, grateful to the officers who went above and beyond to help the senior dog. Major Ron Martin of the NCPC said:
Our officers face a variety of challenges daily and sometimes things are not routine. We are very happy Miss Daisy was reunited with her owners as a result of Officers Jost and Lekamp’s quick thinking and tenacious efforts! I think Missy Daisy is ecstatic too!”
