A man in St. Augustine, Florida, has been arrested for leaving a dog to die inside of a parked car. As reported by the Florida-Times Union, 41-year-old Justin Charles Mitchell was arrested last Friday after a “poodle-type” dog was found dead inside of his Volvo SUV.
The vehicle was parked at the Holiday Inn near World Golf Village, where staff stated that Mitchell had “overstayed his reservation,” and refused to open the door or answer the phone in his room. The dog was found “decomposing” on the floor inside of the vehicle.
When the authorities confronted Mitchell, he claimed that he had checked on the dog just hours before. However, a St. Johns County Animal Control officer determined that the dog had been dead for “at least 24 hours.”
Mitchell checked into the hotel after having a fight with his wife – she was the one who discovered their dead pet inside of the car when she went to the hotel to check on her husband. Mitchell is charged with charged with unlawful confinement or abandonment of an animal and aggravated animal cruelty, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison; he is already out on bail.
