On Monday morning, the Baltimore City Animal Control officers found Sophie; the dog had been lying lifeless in the backyard of a vacant house in the Penn North neighborhood. No one in the area had ever seen the dog before.

No one knows if Sophie had been dropped off by a heartless and cruel individual, or had she wandered into the yard and collapsed? She was weak, not able to stand, walk or even lift her head.

“Every part of her body was sunken in; it was clear she hadn’t eaten for a long time. The officers carried her out of the yard and rushed her to BARCS,” the organization posted on their social media page along with Sophie’s heartbreaking photo.

At the time of her arrival at BARCS, the emaciated dog was hypothermic. She weighed just 17-pounds – one of the worst cases of starvation officers had ever seen. A dog with her body build and breed should weigh near 50 pounds; every bone in Sophie’s body was visible including the indentations of her skull.

No matter how weak she was, Sophie wasn’t giving up; her  absolute trust in humans still undeniable.

“While Sophie couldn’t lift her head or body, her little eyes followed everyone in the exam room. Her tail wagged each time someone touched her, and she would try to nudge her nose and paws towards our teams’ hands for more love…”

Sophie has been transferred to an emergency clinic and is currently fighting for her life.

Anyone with information about this dog is asked to contact the Baltimore City Animal Control Animal Abuse Unit at 443.681.0101. If you see something, say something.

The organization is seeking donations to save Sophie’s life: https://barcs.org/urgent-care.

Our Franky Fund supports the medical bills of animals critically injured or victims of extreme abuse and neglect and is an essential service in our community. At this time, when our entire community is financially struggling, BARCS desperately needs funding in order to give Sophie a chance. Even just a few dollars will make a difference.
