An elderly dog, 13 years of age, fights to survive after being horribly neglected. The dog, whose name is Lady, was surrendered to the Henry County Animal Control before being rescued by Halfway Home Rescue Inc. in Connecticut.

The rescue group writes:

Her owners finally did one good thing for her…they surrendered their ownership rights. Hazel came into Henry County Animal Control loaded with ticks and is severely matted. Volunteers stated, “how the heck did these owners not notice their dog being infested with ticks?”. Well, that’s the thing…the owners didn’t notice because they didn’t care.

On Wednesday, one day after the rescue group’s initial post about Lady, a dire update was written for Facebook followers:

This morning we received communication from the shelter that Hazel crashed. She was unable to move and her gums were white. She was then rushed to the animal hospital. The veterinary staff got her into the tub and began shaving her. Under her matted fur was an entire community of ticks. Her body has been a host for them and breeding environment. Her bone marrow is low. She has been started on antibiotics, fluids, prescription food, etc. Her health status right now is 50/50,

The rescue organization also learned that Lady’s original owner was sent to a nursing home because of Parkinson’s Disease. It was the owner’s family who failed to give Lady the care that she needed.

  1. If her original owner saw what her supposed family had done to her furbaby, she would be absolutely devastated…… the family is always happy to snag anything of financial value from a relative who has to go into an assisted care home, but they are often cruel to the furbabies (breaks my heart)……. We promised my Dad his deathbed that we would take care of his furbabies (7 years ago). We have kept that promise….. the furbabies are family!!!

We hope Hazel recovers ASAP and is rehomed into a loving furever family where she will be treated as a beloved family member!!!
