A dog in Dearborn, Michigan, is safe after someone abandoned him in a small cage alongside a road. On Thursday, the Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit Facebook page recounted the cruel situation to page followers, writing:

Last night, a dog weighing over 60 pounds was rescued from the side of the road on the south end of Dearborn. He was found crammed into a small dog crate along with a feeder, dishes, and dog toys.

The dog was discovered around 9 p.m. on Wednesday night by a good Samaritan who noticed the cage alongside the roadway. The man immediately stopped to help the abandoned dog and phoned the authorities. The dog was transported to Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit – he is described as “very friendly” and in “good condition.”

The animal welfare agency reminds the public that it is a crime to abandon a pet, writing:

Abandonment of a pet is a misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to a $500 fine and 30 days in jail. The police are investigating this crime, and Friends is offering a $500 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator.
