mansion held shocking number of dogs

Tip leads to discovery of 136 dogs inside of multi-million dollar mansion

A tip led authorities in Orange, California, to a shocking discovery inside of a multi-million dollar mansion. As reported by multiple agencies, dozens of dogs were living inside of a mansion with Edward and Jo Reitkopp – a couple which is facing multiple animal cruelty charges as a result of the dismal conditions found inside of the residence.

The couple was allegedly operating a breeding operation of small breed dogs, identified as Shih Tzus, poodles and maltese. As reported by CBS Los Angeles, a neighbor claims that ten years ago she bought a small breed dog from the couple for $8,000 – the dog was in poor health and lived under five years.

The dogs at the mansion were living in squalor – officials responding to the house had to wear protective gear and encountered copious amounts of feces and urine inside. Sergeant Phil McMullen is quoted in 9 News, “There was dog excrement and urine all over the floor. It appeared to be unliveable. The smell was unbearable for me. I’m surprised how people can live in that situation.”

Many of the dogs seized from the mansion on East Woodbine Avenue are in poor health – more serious charges against their owners could be possible as the investigation continues.
