A starved dog, found in the northern Michigan woods with a gunshot wound to the head, has died. The heartbreaking news was recently shared with followers of the Cherryland Humane Society. The animal welfare agency writes:

It is with a heavy heart to inform that Phoenix has passed. For those of you that do not know, Phoenix was found in the woods starved with a gun shot wound to the head.
Grief-stricken staff penned a message to the abused and discarded dog:
My dearest Phoenix, as I sit here with so much anger and sadness, I wanted to let you know that you have many people who cared about you. Although I have known you for only a few short days, I will forever be impacted by your strength and sweetness. You have suffered at the hands of “humans,” things we can only imagine yet you welcomed our touch.
From the good Samaritan who found you curled in a ball freezing, starving and injured to Animal Control and the vets who tried to save you. I hope you know we tried everything we could but you are in a better place where you will never have to worry about food or people hurting you again.
Thank you my beautiful Phoenix it was an honor to have been a part of your life.
