The internet erupted in cheers this week as Molly the magpie and her furry best friend, Peggy the Staffordshire terrier, were finally reunited. Their heartwarming story, documented on their popular social media account, captured hearts worldwide.

The unlikely friendship blossomed in Queensland, Australia, when Juliette and Reece rescued a magpie chick they named Molly in 2020. Molly thrived alongside Peggy, forming a unique bond that surprised everyone, including their owners. The playful duo’s antics, which often involved Molly trying to rouse a slumbering Peggy, became an internet sensation. Their fame grew with videos showcasing Molly’s impressive ability to mimic Peggy’s bark.

Their popularity blossomed over Instagram during the Covid lockdown, and more than a million followers quickly tuned in.

However, their story took a turn in March when Molly was confiscated by wildlife authorities. Due to regulations concerning native animals, Juliette and Reece were unable to keep Molly without a permit. Devastated by the separation, the couple, along with their legion of online supporters, launched a campaign for Molly’s return.

The public outcry was significant. A petition garnered over 155,000 signatures, and the story reached international news outlets. The pressure ultimately led to a happy ending. The Queensland government granted the couple a special license, allowing Molly to return home to Peggy.

The caretakers had to subscribe to wildlife training and advocate the appropriate native wildlife care and rehabilitation. In addition they must follow strict government conditions agreeing not to receive any ongoing commercial gain from Molly.

But Reece and Juliette still have a dream or two for Molly; including him flying away and starting a family and then, bringing the entire family back.

This heartwarming reunion serves as a testament to the power of interspecies friendship and the impact of social media activism. While legalities surrounding wild animals must be respected, the overwhelming public support swayed authorities in this unique case. Molly and Peggy are back to sharing their playful antics, no doubt to the delight of their devoted online following.
