Just recently, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, had the proud honor to help a dog that had been missing for 12 years find her owner again and be reunited.

A 13-year-old Siberian husky arrived at the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services on April 8, 2026 as a stray. She was a mess; she was undernourished, missing patches of her once beautiful coat and moved very slowly because time and hardship had taken their tolls.

There was one thing the dog had that so many lost dogs lack; this husky had a microchip and with it, the information contained a phone number. Bryce answered the phone, and the Texas resident was practically speechless. His dog named Sierra had been missing for the last 12 years!
Bryce told the shelter staff the last time he had seen Sierra had been in New Mexico. Sierra, a now 13-year-old, 40 pound, spayed Husky, went missing in 2014 while Bryce was relocating from New Mexico to Texas.

She had been staying with a friend temporarily, but then she was gone. Over time Bryce had lost track of her. He always wondered what happened to her, but never imagined, the dog would show up as a stray 1,400 miles away in Brooksville, Florida.

After seeing the dog’s shelter photos, Bryce was heartbroken at her condition and according to the shelter personnel, he had become overwhelmed with the thought he could see and be with her again.
And we knew we had to make that happen.
While in our care, Sierra received:
Medical treatment
Medicated baths
Daily walks and enrichment
And endless love from our staff and volunteers
It was soon time for Sierra to find her way home, and just eight days after she arrived at the shelter and received the greatest of care and affection, it was time for her to leave.
With the incredible help of We Rate Dogs and a generous sponsorship from Best Western, Sierra began her trek to Texas and back to the person who never forgot her.

Sierra made her journey back to where she belongs, and now she is home! She is safe, loved and back together with Bryce.

Please, if your pet isn’t microchipped—or if your information has changed—take a few minutes to make it right. Imagine all the lost dogs who could be reunited if they had microchips, and we only knew where their home really is.
