Back in March 2026, the Sherman Texas Police were dispatched to a home on North Grand Avenue referencing a report of a dog being shot with a pellet gun.

When officers arrived, neighbors reported hearing a dog yelping in obvious pain and fright. During the investigation, officers met up with Gary Larkins, 41, and Thomas Bush, 52 standing over the injured dog. Bush had been holding a hammer. The men said they had tried to surrender the dog to a shelter, but they were refused because of the overcrowded conditions.

Officers determined the dog had been shot by Larkins and Bush telling the officers they had been trying to euthanize the dog. Both men were arrested and have been charged with Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animals Causing Serious Bodily Injury, a third-degree felony. If found guilty, the suspects could face up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The dog, later named Olivia, was transported to the Sherman Animal Shelter. She had sustained serious injuries, including trauma to her head and face. Her recovery involved losing an eye, however, through it all, she never lost her sweet personality.

There has been an outpouring of community support for Olivia; she received lots of toys and food brought to the shelter specifically for her.

And now, three weeks later, as Olivia recovers, her update promises to make you smile from ear to ear. Who doesn’t appreciate happy endings, and yes, we have a great one.

Olivia has been adopted by a Sherman Police Department Officer Kyle Gray and his wife Hannah. They are both in love with Olivia, and she is promised the best life going forward.

Have a wonderful life Olivia – you sure deserve the best!
