At the Tirupati zoo in India, a man named Prahlad Gujjar, 38, was tragically mauled to death by a lion on Wednesday. Gujjar reportedly climbed over a 12-foot fence and entered the lion enclosure in an attempt to take a selfie with the animal.

A security guard raised the alarm when Gujjar was spotted jumping onto a nearby water tower and then climbing over the fence surrounding the enclosure which housed a lion and two lionesses, Kumar, Sundari and Dongalpur.

According to NDTV, the lion, named Dongalpur, attacked Gujjar at the Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park before zoo caretakers could intervene. Gujjar, who was visiting the zoo alone, was pronounced dead at the scene. Dongalpur has now been moved to a cage and is being kept under observation.

Gujjar was believed to have been intoxicated according to local media reports. After the lion attacked him, he reportedly tried to save himself.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of respecting zoo safety regulations and the dangers of entering animal enclosures. Wild animals are unpredictable and can react aggressively, even when seemingly calm. It is crucial to prioritize safety and follow zoo guidelines to ensure a positive and harm-free experience for both visitors and animals.

  1. I can’t believe that this happened……. It would never have occurred to me to do such a thing……. I am terrified of big carnivorous animals so I would never have thought of getting a selfie with them……. I am horrified for this man’s awful death and for his family. I can’t imagine how the animals’ caregivers were even able to retrieve his remains from the lionesses…….. wild animals are just that: wild and dangerous as well as unpredictable.

I hope that publicity about this incident will help keep others from trying this scary feat and prevent future deaths.
