A heartbreaking story in the southeastern part  Alaska has taken a bittersweet turn. Amanda Richmond Rogers, missing since December 23rd, 2023, after attempting to rescue her dog from the icy Eagle River, has been found. The discovery, made by a passerby on Sunday, March 27th, 2024, revealed Amanda embracing her beloved canine companion.

According to the Anchorage Daily News, Amanda had been walking along the North Fork Trail with her husband and their dogs when one of the furry companions fell through the ice. In a selfless act of love, Amanda jumped in after the dog but was unfortunately swept away by the current. Search efforts continued for several days in the frigid Alaskan winter, but harsh conditions ultimately forced a suspension of active search operations.

The dog had fallen through a small opening in the ice; Brian Rogers wrote in a statement, that he had also gone into the water first to try and rescue the dog, but was not able to find it. As he got out of the water, Rogers said his wife hurried into the water.

I KNEW FROM THE LOOK ON HER FACE SHE WAS GOING TO SAVE OUR DOG. SHE IS AN EMERGENCY ROOM NURSE, TRAINED TO HELP AND SAVE PEOPLE. IN THIS SITUATION, SHE WAS GOING TO SAVE OUR DOG. I YELLED BUT DOUBT SHE EVEN HEARD ME AS SHE WAS COMPLETELY CONCENTRATING ON SAVING THE DOG…

Despite the long odds, Amanda’s family never gave up hope. Now, their worst fears have been confirmed, but alongside the grief comes a powerful image of unwavering devotion. Amanda’s body was found with the dog still in her arms, a testament to the deep bond they shared.

This is a tragedy, but Amanda’s final act speaks volumes about her character. She bravely risked her life to save her dog, a story that exemplifies the incredible connection between people and their pets.

Amanda’s sister Jennifer Richmond confirmed that she was found with her dog in her arms and that to her boys, “she really did die a hero.”
