Tennessee – A 350-lb bear was “humanely euthanized” after entering a family’s tent in the Elkmont Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park early Sunday morning. According to a news release from the park, the bear “ripped into” the tent where a family of five, and a dog, were sleeping.
The bear scratched the mother and a three-year-old child before being scared away by the father.
Wildlife officials set traps around the campground and the bear was put down after being captured. Officials believe that the smell of food led the bear into the tent. Officials cited the bear’s “extreme food motivation,” and its lack of fear of humans as the reason for the capture and euthanasia.
The mother and child were treated for superficial scratches from the bear, reports NBC News.
