Animal lovers rejoice, endangered species protections are back in place for wolves. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) issued a jubilant release on February 10, stating:

Today, a federal judge overturned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s November 2020 decision to delist wolves across most of the continental United States. This decision will restore federal Endangered Species Act protections for these iconic carnivores.

According to HSUS, the decision to restore the protections was the result of a lawsuit by the HSUS and a coalition of conservation organizations. During the time that the protections were removed in January 2021, hundreds of wolves were killed by hunters, especially in Wisconsin, where state-licensed hunters killed 215 wolves in a span of just three days.

Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, said:

“Today is a monumental victory for wolves who will now be protected from state-sponsored bloodbaths. After having yet another wolf delisting overturned in federal court, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service should finally learn its lesson. Instead of continuing to devise convoluted excuses to strip these beloved animals of legal protections, the agency must develop a plan for meaningful recovery across the species’ range and ensure that states will not decimate their wolf populations.”

According to the HSUS, only the Northern Rockies population of wolves current remain unprotected.
