Tasmania, Australia – On Monday, officials discovered hundreds of pilot whales stranded on Ocean Beach, along Tasmania’s West Coast. Experts initially believed that approximately half of the estimated 250 whales were deceased. As reported by CNN, the number of survivors quickly dwindled as the week progressed.

In a press conference, Brendon Clark of the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service, said:

“Of the 35 whales that were remaining alive this morning, we’ve managed to re-float, rescue and release 32 of those animals and that’s a terrific result.”

The tragic whale stranding occurred exactly two years after Australia’s worst whale stranding…which happened in the same area.

Rescuers will do their best to rescue whales that restrand on the beaches, and to remove carcasses of the deceased far from the beach area to help protect people from sharks that will come to feed on them.
