A California woman’s brave dog sustained serious injuries while defending her from a mountain lion attack near the Trinity River. The frightening encounter happened on Monday when Erin Wilson and her Belgian malinois, Eva, went for an afternoon walk.

Wilson said that the lion lunged at her when Eva was a short distance ahead on a path – when Wilson called for her dog, Eva responded quickly, throwing herself at the big cat and battling fiercely despite being outweighed by the wild feline. After a few moments, the mountain lion latched onto Eva’s head and would not let go, even as Wilson pummeled it with rocks and her fists, reports NBC News.

Desperate for help, Wilson ran to the nearby roadway and flagged down Sharon Houston, who was driving by. Houston grabbed pepper spray and a PVC pipe, and Wilson got a tire iron, and together they went after the big cat, who had dragged Eva off the trail. The pepper spray finally made the cat release Eva, but not before causing serious injuries. The mountain lion fractured Eva’s skull, punctured her sinus cavity, and injured one of her eyes.

According to an Instagram post, Eva is doing better and may get to come home soon:

Eva is recovering. There is a potential for Eva to come home as soon as tomorrow afternoon. That’s a very optimistic outlook, but she gulped down a whole can of dog food after the video. She took a few steps for us. She was very talkative (she’s always been vocal) and groan-y. She was pretty alert after 30 mins or so.

Wilson told the Sacramento Bee:

“I don’t think I will ever be able to live up to how amazing and loyal she is to me.”
