On Saturday night, a devastating fire killed 11 dogs and puppies at the LARAS House Shelter in Mexia, Texas. Among the dead were Petunia and her nine three-week-old puppies. According to the shelter’s Facebook post, another pup named Ace perished as well. The shelter asked for prayers for its staff and volunteers and advised that there would be some “challenging days” ahead.

According to the shelter, Ace, a blue heeler, was recovering from surgery; they said that the dogs and puppies who were in the office area are the ones who died, and noted that the ones held in the shelter survived.

The shelter asked for patience while they evaluate the situation further:

In the next several days please be patient with us if we do not respond to calls or messages as we will be evaluating our situation and where to proceed on recovering salvageable items out of the office. The shelter will be closed until we can ensure the safety of our staff and animals as we process all of this and figure out where to begin. While it is horrible what happened, we are thankful that it did not spread any further.
