A Good Samaritan spotted Bravo lying on the porch of a vacant house, and this is where his story begins. The woman who found him didn’t look away nor did she walk away as other area residents had done; instead she called out for help. Bravo was no longer invisible.

Melrose Park Neglected Dogs stepped up to help. Their first step was to get Bravo emergency life saving treatment.

By Saturday afternoon, Bravo arrived at Abbott’s Animal Clinic, and after a preliminary physical examination, it was determined his past had been one of terrible neglect. The goal at the veterinary hospital was to stabilize his condition.

On Sunday morning, Bravo was transferred to Smiling Dog Farms where he has been placed into isolation for Sarcoptic mange treatment which is highly contagious and able to be spread to humans. He has been placed on antibiotics for underlying issues and dewormed. Generally dogs with Sarcoptic mange scratch non stop, but Bravo hasn’t done so at all – it’s as if he just gave up and no longer bothered.

Bravo has a long road to recovery. He was given a sulfa and pine tar medicated bath and a few nodules have fallen off.

It is estimated that the dog’s age is between 12 to 18 months. He does have some tartar on his canines likely aging him to be about a year, however with his suppressed immune system he might appear older than he actually is. All of his adult teeth are present.

Bravo has not been neutered and his poor body condition indicates he has had an extremely hard life in so short a time.

I know he has the contagious mange and it will spread to people but I could not help but hold him and it would not be the first time I got scabies from the dogs. He needed someone to hold him.
