Los Angeles, CA – A well-known, and beloved by many, mountain lion is believed to be responsible for killing a small dog who was being walked during the evening last Friday. According to multiple sources, a Chihuahua mix named Piper was on an outing with a dog walker around 6:30 Friday evening when the mountain lion came out of some brush and pounced, silently dragging her away.

The dog walker, who has chosen to remain anonymous, tells KTLA News:

“It was like a two- or three-second struggle. He had Piper in his mouth. He didn’t growl at all. I didn’t even hear him. I never had a chance.”

Piper’s owner, Daniel Jimenez, told the news agency:

“My wife and I got Piper in 2014. We rescued her and she was just the sweetest dog. We’re just devastated at the loss of our little dog.”

The big cat is believed to be P-22, an 11-year-old mountain lion who wears a tracking collar and is known to frequent the area. As reported by the New York Post, there are no previously documented cases involving P-22 killing a pet, but residents believe that it was him because they recognized his collar on a resident’s security video that captured that lethal attack.

Those who love P-22 hope that he does not pay the ultimate price for killing the small dog. One resident told The Post,

“The drought means there are less rabbits and other wildlife in the area, so P-22 is looking for food. This is his home and we have to adapt.”

Even Piper’s owner wants to see P-22 spared, telling KTLA:

“I don’t want anything bad to happen to P-22. I just want people to be safe out there so that nothing like this happens again.”
