A Utah man is accused of nearly beating a Labrador retriever puppy “to death.” According to multiple sources, 24-year-old Marvin Lopez nearly killed the five-month-old puppy at an apartment complex in February. As reported by Deseret News, multiple charges, including torture of a companion animal, and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, were filed last Friday.
According to KUTV News, charging documents state that “the dog was a certified companion animal and suffered enough blood loss from the beating where its life was in danger.” The person who reported the incident claims to have observed Lopez beating the puppy in the bathroom – when police arrived to the apartment, the puppy was found on the bathroom floor, unable to walk and “whimpering.”
In addition to being beaten, a veterinarian determined that the puppy may have been choked and kicked, and it was suffering from “THC toxicity.” On the day of the incident, Lopez was arrested and taken to the Salt Lake City Jail – his charges are third-degree felonies.
The puppy has since recovered and was adopted to a new family.
