When Ginger, a pit bull, dug under the fence surrounding her foster family’s Chandler, Arizona, yard, a neighbor shot her in the head. According to Thursday’s ABC 15 News, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputy who responded not only provided her with life-saving medical aid, but he also paid her veterinary costs.
Deputy Brian Bowling, who is also a trained paramedic, told ABC 15, “I came toward the dog to try and get her out of traffic. She went around me and jumped into the driver’s seat.” Deputy Bowling applied special combat gauze to slow the bleeding, but Ginger needed surgery to survive – unfortunately, the expense was beyond her foster family’s means. Deputy Bowling explained why he offered to pay for the surgery himself, “It just didn’t seem right for a dog that survived so much to die because the owner didn’t have the money to pay for it.”
A fundraiser has been established to help Deputy Bowling recoup the thousands of dollars that he spent to save Ginger’s life – click here to read more.
Ginger is also in need of a new home to live in – if you can help, please email: [email protected]

Thank you Deputy for your generosity. Fosters in some states don’t have to pay for vet bills….so I thought.
I guess I don’t understand, if the dog was living with a foster family, wasn’t it the responsibility of whatever organization they were fostering for to pay for the care of the dog? Thank goodness Deputy Bowling has a kind heart and was willing to step up and take care of Ginger. I do hope there will be some sort of consequences for the one that shot her, shooting a dog like this for digging under a fence is beyond cruel!
Too often, a rescue doesn’t even have enough money to pay for food for the dogs in foster care. Many people who foster use their own money to support the dogs.
Not true fosters pay for food rescues pay for vet bills.
I volunteered at a small shelter in Howard county. We had several fosters. The shelter took care of shots and spray and neutering. BUT, if there was an accident that broke a leg or if a dachshund would hurt its back, we would not have the funds to take care of them. I once put out $2600 for my foster who had to have surgery.
Dorcas where I come from fosters pay for food, but, are not responsible for vet bills.
What a wonderful and caring law enforcement, has a heart of gold, not too many cops would do that. God sent this angel to help this poor pup. May God grant you a,life of love and peace and this fund set up to help you will it repay you back plus, some and more. Wishing the pup a forever loving and save home
