Jacksonville, FL – On Wednesday, a black bear was fatally shot after escaping from an enclosure at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. The zoo released a statement about the fatal incident, explaining what transpired before the bear was killed.
At 5:10 pm tonight, one of our North American black bears escaped the exhibit and engaged with a zookeeper behind the scenes. An emergency radio call was initiated and our lethal weapons team responded immediately.
The zoo stated that humans are given their “highest priority” which is why the decision was made to use lethal force on the bear. However, the decision was not made lightly and is impacting staff. The zoo said:
It is profoundly painful when we have a loss of an animal, especially under circumstances such as this.
The situation remains under investigation.
