At the Starfish Animal Rescue, a foster-based animal rescue based in Geneva, Illinois, a dog named Winchester had been adopted from the organization in 2017. Of course, everyone at the rescue thought Winchester had been living his best life; that is until he wasn’t.

Winchester had been unexpectedly dropped off at the DuPage County Animal Services earlier in the week. Eight years later, Winchester had been surrendered, and his family never notified the rescue, but there was no hesitation – Winchester was taken back into the care of Starfish Anima Rescue, but urgently needed a foster home.

The dog’s family had turned him in accompanied with a handwritten note saying it was going to be very hard on Winchester; they asked he be given extra love. Next to him, the family had tucked in a small costume. And now, after eight years, Winchester no longer had a family; the only life he had ever known.

One of the rescue’s volunteers arrived at the shelter early the next morning.
There she found a sweet, happy little boy, no more than 30 pounds, still wagging his tail, still trusting, still hopeful.
Winchester appeared to be very social and wonderful with people. There is no information if he likes cats or dogs, so he needs a slow introduction as well as keeping other dogs separated to make sure everyone gets along.
This boy did nothing wrong. He deserves softness, patience and stability — especially after losing everything familiar to him.
UPDATE: A foster home has been secured. Now, let’s this wonderful dog find his forever home and help him live his best life ever.
