At the Apple Valley Animal Shelter in California, we meet one-year-old Spot. His advocates were brought to tears as Spot tried to disappear into the corner of his kennel cage as if he had surrendered to the loneliness and desperation of his plight.
On January 5, Spot was found as a stray on Highway 18 and Yanan Road. He is not microchipped, is one-year-old, not neutered and weighs 56 pounds.

His shelter assessment stated he was scared of being leashed, but he does much better when he cannot see the leash at all. He is an overall nice pup, but is in need of socialization and training.
We watched his head bow down, his ears become heavy and his body slumped.

This isn’t a ‘calm dog.’This is a broken one-year-old who’s giving up quietly.
And the silent ones get overlooked first.
