My experience as a foster parent with Homeward Bound Schnauzer Rescue has been exceptionally rewarding for multiple reasons (and I have volunteered for many yea...rs for a lot of different organization for rescues). This volunteer organization operates under what I consider as a 'foster team' concept to rescue dogs. The team of volunteers coordinates from securing a rescue, arranging for transportation, medical care, fostering in a home, advocating for the dog's needs prior to initiating the adoption process to assure the well being of the dog then of course starts the adoption process into a loving caring home that is appropriately matched for the dog and family. Operating as a team works and taps upon volunteers interests, skills, experience and the satisfaction of rescuing beautiful schnauzers! Love the dedication and passion of our team members who make it happen for our rescues!! See More

Without any doubt this rescue runs on dedicated people who are all connected by the same goal - what is best for the dog is what they will strive to do by any a...nd all means within their reach. I am a foster volunteer and I know from many perfectly matched adoptions that this group of people work many hours and go the extra miles to save dogs and place them in the best loving home for them. This is where I belong as a foster and where I feel needed and feel like I belong. The volunteers at Homeward Bound Schnauzer Rescue are my rescue family and all of us working together make a Great Rescue Team. See More

Our bonded pair from Texas, Egypt and Baxter, just arrived this afternoon! They have been in transit since Wednesday, so they are probably ready to settle into their foster homes and rest.

They went straight to the vet from the transport. Baxter was having a little difficulty walking at first, but he is walking better now. He tested positive for a tickborne illness similar to Lyme's Disease. He is on a round of doxycycline which should clear that up. The vet thought they were both a little dehydrated. They were covered in ticks and fleas and they received medication for those. They both had blood work done, once it is back we will schedule the dental surgery for Baxter. Egypt had a fever but was still very energetic. They think Egypt is around 3 and Baxter is around 12. They are both very sweet and settling in well!

Caution: Graphic Pics and Video!

Poor Gretchen is in the worst condition of any dog we have ever seen! We are praying and doing everything we can save her, but she is not out of the woods. That said, in the one video, you can see she has spunk and a voice!

Gretchen was in such bad shape she needed a shot of morphine immediately. She has a large mass on her side, which appears to be a cancerous tumor that has burst. Aside from looking horrific, the smell is awful. She i...s anemic and has significant mats hanging from all over her body. Her paws are very similar to Sammie, they are huge and looks like she has thick casts on each leg. The vet removed the mats that she could without sedating her. They contained feces, black oozing material that looked like tar, fleas, etc. Her skin even has burns from urine. She will need to be sedated to be clipped. She is at the vet and will be staying until she's stable. Paws crossed for Gretchen!

Sammie is a 10 year old little girl. She has a mass on her tummy, which will be x-rayed today. She is missing the bottom part of her right hind leg/paw. Sammie also has mats that are so thick around her paws that you can barely see her toenails (which are significantly overgrown). Her paws, with the mats, are so thick feel like a cast. She will be sedated to be clipped.

Donations towards her care may be made at : http://hbschnauzerrescue.com/donate/

Hansel is a 9 year old black/white parti schnauzer. He is expected to recover nicely after his treatment. Hansel arrived with bilateral ear infections, a fever and could not receive his vaccinations yet because of that. He has patches of fur missing from his skin. He had his dental this morning and lost 6 teeth! While he was sedated, he was clipped. He ate like a champ and will be able to go to his foster home this afternoon! We will get after pictures once he is feeling better.

You may donate to his vet care at:

Yesterday was one of the most difficult days we have had at Homeward Bound Schnauzer Rescue. We received three dogs into rescue who are in dire need of extensive veterinary care. Two have paws so matted that they are about the size of golf balls and are thick like a cast! Luckily, we were able to get them appointments at our wonderful veterinarian immediately.

They all were infested with fleas and covered in mats. They have not seen a veterinarian for at least seven years.... Each of them needed vaccinations and a dental. Because we have so much to update, we will do posts for each dog so we can keep those updated.

As you can imagine, the vet costs are going to be significant. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide, please donate at the link below. Fortunately, every dollar raised this month will be matched by a generous donor up to $5,000!

Even though we are 100% volunteer organization, there are still significant costs with rescuing and re-homing schnauzers. There are vet bills, intake and grooming costs, insurance bills and more.

heartbreaking... the 3 dogs coming in from Virginia are in horrible condition (we are calling them VA3) - they are now on their way to the vet. If you want to donate to their vet care we would appreciate it (and so will they)... http://hbschnauzerrescue.com/donate/

BREAKING NEWS!!
We are pleased to announce that we have two dogs en route to us from Texas! Egypt and Baxter found themselves surrendered to the shelter with the owner reporting that one of them has bladder stones. The owner said that if that dog could not have surgery and had to be put down, they should put the other dog down as well because they are bonded. Fortunately, we were able to make the connection and get them on a transport north. We will have them assessed at the vet as quickly as possible.
