Abandoned puppy found tied up in sack left to die

A helpless puppy is safe today after being discovered abandoned and tied up in a sack in Hamilton, Ohio. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday at L.J. Smith Park, has sparked outrage in the community and renewed calls for responsible pet ownership.

According to reports, a park worker spotted a suspicious sack. Upon investigation, he discovered a young puppy whimpering inside. The concerned person immediately contacted animal control, who arrived on the scene and brought the puppy to Animal Friends Humane Society.

It is not known how long the puppy had been tied up in the sack; he had no water or food available. It was obvious whoever abandoned him like this left him to die.

We have been referring to the puppy as Ryder. Even though he was allegedly dumped in the park, we still legally have to abide by the three day stray hold. This means he remains in the facility for three days and can not be adopted out or sent to rescue. After the three days, he is property of the shelter and can be adopted.

Animal Friends Humane Society

The puppy, estimated to be around two to three months of age and is currently undergoing a medical evaluation at Yesterday on intake, he was not acting like a normal puppy. He was lethargic and weak. While his condition could be accounted for his traumatic experience, they also had to rule out sicknesses. He tested negative for parvo and was vaccinated and dewormed. He has been resting and regaining his strength and stability.

today, Ryder was alert, curious, and ready to eat! We appreciate everyone’s support for the little guy already and we hope to update with every step of Ryder’s journey.

There is an active investigation to find whoever committed this crime to this poor innocent creature. If you have any tips, please contact Deputy Dog Warden Burkett at 513-887-7297 ext 3. You may remain anonymous.

If you would like to donate to the care of all animals, including Ryder, at Animal Friends, please click here.

Animal abandonment is a crime, and we will do everything in our power to find the person responsible for this act of cruelty.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership. The Animal Friends Humane Society encourages anyone considering bringing a pet into their home to carefully research the commitment involved and ensure they can provide a loving and permanent home for their furry friend.

Colorado wildlife officers rescue mountain lions with daring rope maneuver

0
Spread the love

In a heart-stopping turn of events, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officers became unexpected heroes to two young mountain lions. The dramatic rescue unfolded last Friday near Durango, Colorado, at the Vallecito Reservoir spillway.

Quick thinking by a dam tender, Mike Canterbury, prevented a potential tragedy. As he prepared to release water down the spillway, he spotted two mountain lion cubs precariously trapped inside. Realizing the rushing water could drown the young cats, Canterbury immediately contacted CPW.

District Wildlife Manager Ty Smith arrived on the scene and prioritized a non-invasive approach. In a daring move, Officer Smith dangled a rope into the spillway, hoping the curious cubs would use it to climb to safety. His gamble paid off! One adventurous cub readily grasped the rope and was hoisted back up, quickly disappearing into the nearby woods.

The second cub, however, proved more hesitant. Undeterred, Officer Smith bravely climbed down into the spillway himself. With patience and a strategically placed catch pole, he managed to coax the cub towards the rope. Working together, the CPW team successfully lifted the cub over the concrete wall and released it back into the wild. Though initially seeking a brief moment under a nearby truck, the second cub eventually followed its sibling back into the wild.

A release of water likely would have drowned the two lions,

UPDATE: Bear cub pulled out of tree for selfie photos sent to rehab facility

0
Spread the love

In Greenville, South Carolina, the bear cub rescued in Asheville on April 16, after residents of a nearby apartment complex pulled the cub from a tree for a photo, has been sent to the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Center for the next eight to ten months before it will be able to be released back into the wild.

According to the agency’s press release,  the staff had been contacted by the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Department regarding a group of people at the apartment complex seen pulling two bear cubs from a tree and taking photos of themselves with the cubs. NCWRC staff arrived and were told both cubs had escaped after a cub bit one of the people. One of the cubs was found later in a retention pond and taken to a licensed cub rehabilitation facility. The other has not been located.

When I arrived, that bear cub had been found on the edge of a retention pond, a little bit inside the water on the edge of the retention pond. So, it seemed to be shivering. It was probably a bit cold, and it did seem to be favoring one of its paws at the time, so luckily, I was able to scoop it up pretty quickly.

Rehab facility

The video showed four people pulling at the tree branch to grab the black bear cubs that had been perched over a fence separating the apartment complex’s property. One woman grabbed one of the cubs and held it under its belly while the woman screamed in delight. The group then started taking photos while the cub cried out in fright; one of the cubs fell to the ground and ran off. He then tried to climb the fence while the woman chased it. It has been reported the cub bit the woman.

A second bear cub was seen in the original video of the group of people taking photos with the bears. That cub has not been located, nor has not been spotted since. This however, is not necessarily a bad thing, the agency stated. More than likely the mother bear who has been seen around the apartment complex quite frequently found her cub and is caring for it.

There have been no charges because the bear cubs were immediately released, and officers have determined there will be no charges filed. The residents were warned to leave wildlife alone.

The public should contact NCWRC if they suspect they’ve encountered an orphaned bear cub. If you believe a cub has been orphaned, do not attempt to capture it. Instead, give the mother plenty of room and time to reconnect with her cub.

To avoid harming yourself or the bear cub:

  • Do not handle it.
  • Do not attempt to catch it.
  • Do not remove it.
  • Do not feed it.
  • Do take note of your location and call the NC Wildlife Helpline (866-318-2401). If after hours or on weekends, call a district wildlife biologist to report it.

An enduring enigma about ‘Jenny’ the cat’s survival on board the Titanic when it sank

0
Spread the love

The RMS Titanic’s sinking in 1912 remains a harrowing chapter in maritime history. While the human tragedy is rightfully at the forefront, whispers persist about another soul lost at sea – Jenny, the ship’s feline mascot and her recently born kittens.

Unlike pampered canine passengers, Jenny served a vital role. Ship’s cats were mousers, keeping rodent populations in check. Accounts suggest Jenny, possibly a transfer from the Titanic’s sister ship, the Olympic, was a familiar sight patrolling the decks. Some survivors even reported a surge in rats after the disaster, highlighting Jenny’s effectiveness.

The mystery surrounding Jenny’s fate deepens when we consider conflicting stories. Some accounts claim she perished with the ship, a victim of the icy Atlantic. Others, including a surviving stewardess, depict Jenny giving birth to kittens shortly before the voyage. This heartwarming tale suggests Jenny, perhaps with her litter, may have been smuggled off the ship, a feat some passengers attempted with their beloved pets.

According to Catster, Jenny used to sleep near a man who cared for her and would give her kitchen scraps and affection. It had been Violet Jessop, the stewardess aboard the ship who survived, had written in her memoirs that Jenny was very affectionate and loved by most of the staff aboard the ship.

Wait! There is a popular myth, however Jenny carried her newborn kittens off the Titantic a week before it sank after the ship stopped in Southampton. A passenger is alleged to have seen the cat leaving the ship with her kittens, had a bad feeling and refused to reboard the ship.

The lack of concrete evidence fuels speculation. Was Jenny a stoic survivor or a tragic casualty? Did her feline intuition sense the impending disaster? These questions linger; a testament to the enduring bond between humans and animals.

While Jenny’s story may be shrouded in the mists of time, it serves as a poignant reminder of the countless creatures impacted by historical events.

As for the 12 dogs reported to have been aboard the Titanic, there were three survivors: two Pomeranians and a Pekingese.

One tragic story of a dog owner tells of first-class passenger Ann Elizabeth Isham. She had boarded the Titanic with her beloved Great Dane and refused to leave his side when the ship began to sink. Ms. Isham was confirmed to be one of only four female first-class passengers to lose her life in the sinking; her body was found frozen at sea, still clinging onto the body of her faithful dog.

The Catster

That terrible day ended up with 1,500 losing their lives along with countless other pets still left unrecorded. May they all be resting in peace.

Miracles happen: Pup left tied up in parking lot deeply wounded and wrapped in plastic ready to be adopted

0
Spread the love

This is Champ! He was pulled from a shelter after 11 days in January and brought to the Illinois based It’s a Pittie Rescue. His condition was critical. He had heartlessly been abandoned by his owner in the shelter parking lot; temperatures had dipped to -30, he suffered from wounds all over his body and had been wrapped in plastic wrap.

As if that wasn’t enough suffering for any dog, he also had a bone lodged in his esophagus, and to think he sat in the shelter for nearly two weeks in that condition. Fortunately, four-year-old Champ was able to undergo surgery which saved his life.

Champ has been one resilient pooch and holds no animosity against anyone. He is currently with his foster mom, and she couldn’t wait to share some of Champ’s loveable traits which hopefully will give this boy a better chance of finding his forever home.

So here we go:

He loves being near us, specifically on our lap. Yes, he’s a lap dog.

Enjoys chewing on his Nylabone and challenging his stuffed animals to a fight till the end.

Cooperative when putting drops in his ears and petting all over his strong cutsie body. He has quite the physique.

Crate trained, goes right in and will sleep like a baby.

Responsible to be left in his room outside his crate with no remodeling needed, at least thus far.

Excited about life, and expresses himself by jumping up to plant kisses on your face.

Pulls a bit on walks but I believe in time he will calm down when he understands he gets to do this every day.

He is curious of his surroundings, bunnies, squirrels, strange dogs in passing. Needs a little more work.

Good boy towards his foster fur siblings through the gate as well as on walks.

Perfected the command “sit” but still working on other commands. He drives a hard bargain, and will need a better, high value treat. But there is hope.

He enjoys the yard, but pretty efficient in doing his business and making a couple of rounds around the perimeter, but runs back into the house.

He loves hanging with his people so he would do well as an only child. But, more to come after we officially dog/ cat test him.

Please share Champ’s story with friends, family and social media contacts. This dog so deserves a life of love, fun and adventure, and the more people who read his courageous journey to recovery, the better his chances of finding the perfect home.

Woman mauled by bear after rolling down car window to take selfies

Spread the love

A recent incident involving a 72-year-old Scottish tourist in Romania serves as a stark reminder of the importance of respecting wild animals and their space. On April 22, the woman, Moira Gallacher, while on vacation, encountered a bear in the Carpathian Mountains.

In an attempt to capture a close-up selfie, her friend stopped her car and rolled down the car window. Tragically, the bear reacted defensively, mauling her arm. According to STVNews, the bear leaped on his hind legs outside of the vehicle’s window, pounced on her and mauled her right arm

The woman’s travel companion quickly stepped on the gas to escape and rushed the woman to the hospital.

we were in the car and we were going to take a picture. And the bears came up to the window. I just wanted to take a picture with them.

Moira Gallacher

Thankfully, the woman received medical attention and is expected to recover. This incident highlights the potential dangers of getting too close to wild animals. The police went out to the area to discourage the bears from the roadway. Tourists and residents were warned to always keep a safe distance when spotting any wildlife.

Why Selfies with Wild Animals are a Bad Idea

Wild animals, despite their majestic appearance, are unpredictable. They have natural instincts and can feel threatened by close encounters. Here’s why approaching them for selfies is a bad idea:

  • Wild animals feel threatened: Our presence, noises, and movements can be perceived as a threat.
  • Unpredictable behavior: Wild animals can react aggressively even if they appear calm initially.
  • Risk of injuries: Even a seemingly playful interaction can lead to serious injuries.

How to Safely Appreciate Wildlife

There are many ways to appreciate wildlife from a safe distance:

  • Use designated areas: National parks and wildlife reserves often have designated viewing areas.
  • Respect distance markers: These markers are put in place for your safety and the animal’s well-being.
  • Use zoom lenses: Capture stunning wildlife photos with a telephoto lens from a safe distance.

The Importance of Responsible Pet Ownership

This incident also serves as a reminder of responsible pet ownership. Just like wild animals, our domestic companions can also react unpredictably, especially when encountering unfamiliar situations. Proper training and responsible pet ownership are crucial to ensure the safety of both your pet and others.

By respecting wild animals and practicing responsible pet ownership, we can ensure a safe and harmonious coexistence for all creatures.

After his owner passed relatives pushed him out into the backyard and forgot he was there

0

Here’s a poor dog whose life has been turned upside down and inside out in the Los Angeles area. One can only imagine the heartbreak he felt when his human died, and then there was more. His canine companion had been thrown out with him into the backyard full of overgrown weeds; only his pal had been left unsupervised and later that day choked to death on his chain that became tangled.

So there he was – left alone, and then he would cry; he was hungry and thirsty. The relatives still living in the house, after his owner died yelled at him to stop howling, yet they never offered him any food or water.

Maybe luck does play a role in survival of the loneliest and those needing help? A neighbor noticed him and quietly went over to the overgrown back yard and left him food. She called out on social media for help.

Good afternoon. I need help for this little one. My neighbor passed away and the people in the house are not taking care of this pup. He is so skinny now. I’ve been feeding him but he needs to be in a better environment. He is left outside day and night. My heart breaks for him. Any help, suggestions are appreciated.

Julia

It was Suzette Hall, founder of  Logan’s Legacy 29, who answered the plea for help; her heart broke just looking at him. He was scared of everything and would run away and hide and leap into the weeds the moment someone just came into his view.

The relatives agreed to surrender the dog, and plans were made to capture the tiny lost soul.

The women set a humane trap and could only wonder what this poor dog must have been feeling after losing everything in his life – his owner, his canine pal and even his home.

i know his mama in Heaven did not want this done to him. Well, sweet baby, we will heal your broken heart. we will show you the love you once knew. we are so sorry for all your sad nights. You have been rescued.

UPDATE: Reward up to $15K for information about duct-taped dog found in dumpster

0
Spread the love

A heartwarming story emerged from Omaha one week ago, but with a disturbing twist. A missing dog was found alive after having been discovered wrapped in duct tape and thrown in a dumpster. Thankfully, the canine’s ordeal has a happy ending, but the Nebraska Humane Society (NHS) continues to search for answers.

There have been no leads in the case; on Friday PETA offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction on cruelty charges for the responsible person(s). The previous reward offered by the Nebraska Humane Society has increased to $10,000.

Employees at an Omaha accounting firm became heroes by accident. On April 14th, they heard noises coming from a dumpster behind their building. Unnerved by the commotion, they waited until the next day to investigate. Expecting to find a stray animal, they were met with a horrifying sight; a small dog completely wrapped in duct tape. The receptacle was scheduled to be emptied by the trash service soon after animal control was called.

The dog, a young cavapoo, was identified as Leo from his microchip and belonging to Erin Dillon-Pasillas who said he had disappeared from her yard on April 11. The duct-tape has been sent to the Sheriff’s Office for analysis. He was rushed to the Nebraska Humane Society where staff sedated him and then removed the tape.

As for Leo, he is slowly feeling better. He is currently being treated for ear infections and for the rash around his snout where the duct-tape pulled on his tender nose and mouth areas.

The NHS is urging anyone with information to come forward. They are hopeful that a witness or someone with knowledge of the incident will help bring the perpetrator to justice.

The dumpsters behind the business, Sweet and Associates, are isolated, and there are no cameras in the vicinity. Anyone with information on this case is urged to contact Animal Control at 402-444-7800 ext 1.
