On a cold-cold day, in a cold-cold week, with average temperatures under 20 degrees Fahrenheit, being trapped under a car is definitely no place for a puppy. On Thursday, a message arrived at Stray Rescue of St. Louis about a puppy stuck under a car on a busy street. A couple had been walking their own dog when they spotted the terrified pup; the concerned people immediately decided to call for help.

It was doubtful the owner of the vehicle would have even known a puppy had been there. The outcome could have easily been tragic had the owner just driven away.

Chief life-saving officer Donna Lochmann was quick to respond. When she first arrived, she wasn’t sure if the puppy was injured or just too frightened to come out from under the vehicle.

Donna’s primary objective was to gain the puppy’s trust, and armed with the tastiest of treats, began placing them carefully within the puppy’s reach and speaking to him softly in a reassuring manner. Donna has certainly been gifted with lots of patience (and lots of treats we may add), and very slowly she began to place the tasty tidbits a bit further out; making the puppy stretch out from underneath the vehicle to reach them.

Fortunately, the puppy was not injured. Donna determined he had been a large breed puppy with very long legs who was skinny and malnourished. She was anxious to gain his trust and take him back to the rescue for a complete veterinarian examination and then onward to a foster home.

Donna was ultimately able to coax the puppy out from under the vehicle, able to pick him up and place him in the back of her warm Jeep. They were headed back to the rescue.

Meet Ti Amo. This beautiful puppy is so full of life and hope. He went right to foster care.

Please come foster a pup so rescuers can be on the streets during this cold burst.
