Stray Rescue of St. Louis didn’t expect ringing in the New Year with more gun violence. Early Thursday morning officers were called to a scene where a dog was found having been shot at least two times.

Officer Ottengheime and Officer Stevens rushed the dog to the rescue, carefully carried him in, and they quickly fell in love. The dog was named Wallace. Local police already know, based on years of kindness and compassion, that Stray Rescue of St. Louis will always step up to help when an animal is in need.

And we know when we need help on a rescue, they will show up for us. Even on their day off.
After being weighed in, Dr. Oliver proceeded with Wallace’s physical examination after sedating him.
Check out his rescue:
There is little doubt that Wallace has a guardian angel because not one of the bullets broke any bones. He does have a broken tooth that will need to be removed, but that can wait until he is more stable. For now, Wallace is being shown the Stray Rescue way; nothing but respect, safety, and love from this moment on.

And when Wallace woke up from sedation, Julia was there petting him, so he wouldn’t wake up and be alone or scared.

Wallace is doing well and wants to thank everyone for rallying around him. Let’s hope 2026 is much gentler and kinder to animals than it started.

We got you, strong boy.
