On Saturday morning, Stray Rescue of St. Louis rescued Campeón (Champion). The dog had been brought to the nonprofit animal rescue organization covered in his own waste. According to rescuers, he had been sitting in a crate for days.

His photos tell his story.

Campeón presented with open wounds on his paws and legs. There was little doubt anyone cared if he lived or died. He had never been taken to a veterinarian for basic care and was dying from an overload of parasites. He tested positive for coccidia, roundworms and hookworms. Because the parasites had gone untreated, his condition had become critical. In addition, he had been suffering from severe diarrhea.

Campeón was exhausted, dehydrated and cold; his body temperature was low.

And then came help. The veterinarians and support staff began treatment. Campeón soon started feeling better. He regained a part of his dignity after receiving a warm bath and medications to help with the parasite infections, and any pain.

His progress continues to move in the right direction. It is truly heartbreaking to meet dogs like Campeón who could have been spared the pain and health issues had their owner made a trip to the veterinarian for the most basic care.
Campeón, you will be cared for the rest of your life. You have our word.
