Senior pup surrendered when family moved and they wanted him euth’ed also

At Fort Worth Abandoned Animal Alliance, a senior Shih Tzu has broken hearts after his family surrendered him and requested he be euthanized because they were moving.

Meet nine-year-old Dillard whose story never did have much happiness. The 17-pound dog had spent nearly his entire life outdoors. The only time he was brought inside had been during inclement weather, and even then, he had been confined to a crate.

There was no doubt Dillard never benefitted from much training or love. He wasn’t house trained and knew little about being a pal and a companion. Fortunately, he was a kind soul who never expected much, and even a small gesture of kindness filled his heart with contentment.

The family filled out Dillard’s surrender form:

How long have you had him? 8 years

Have you used heartworm prevention? No (Dillard is now heartworm positive)

Have you applied tick/flea protection? No

Is Dillard supervised when outdoors? No

Is Dillard neutered? No (He has been neutered now)

And here he is – soaking up the love and attention he’s receiving at the rescue. He is described as very sweet and extremely trusting. Oh, the goodness of our dogs.

Dillard will be pampered and loved, and his new life starts now. He has some healing to do, and it will be a few months before he’s ready to be adopted.
