Rescuers work in freezing cold water saving frightened husky trapped in runoff on Detroit River

The Detroit Fire Department arrived early Monday morning at a reported section of the Detroit River to help a dog in emergency need of rescue. The situation took patience, planning and teamwork since the dog had become trapped in a water run off area along the icy river.

The rescue plans had to keep in mind the ice chunks, the tunnels and the private property surrounding the best access to the dog.

Fishermen near the tunnel at the Gordie Howe Bridge had spotted the dog over the weekend.

Upon arrival, the Field Services team dressed in wetsuits and braved the freezing water. Ladder 8 crew worked alongside Michigan Humane, police and animal control for four hours.

The two-year-old Siberian husky suffered from hypothermia. He is now receiving treatment at the Mackey Center for Animal Care. He did not have a collar or a microchip and will be on stray hold for the next week. If he is not claimed, he will most likely be available for adoption.

Thanks to the concerned citizens who initially called this in. It’s a reminder that if you see something, say something. Call the Cruelty Hotline at 313-872-3401 anytime to report an animal in need.
