A Texas man has been charged with animal cruelty after an abandoned dog was found at the Pittsburgh International Airport on Friday.

According to the Allegheny County Police Facebook page, officers were alerted to the dog, which was running loose outside near the curb at departures. Witnesses were quickly able to locate and bring the adorable chocolate Labrador retriever puppy to safety.

During the investigation, officers identified Omar Perez, 42, from Texas, who initially claimed he had seen an Uber driver abandoning the dog. It was later determined Perez had been the owner who abandoned the puppy when he found out he was not able to fly with his pet without the proper paperwork and airline fees.

Perez faces multiple charges of animal cruelty and abandonment.

The puppy is doing fine and will be placed in foster care, pending the outcome of legal proceedings.

Many thanks to Patrol Officer Riley Tkatch for his role in the investigation and making sure the puppy was safe.

Don’t leave your pets behind. We will investigate and we will file charges.
