At MSPCA-Angell in Boston, Massachusetts, 12 Labrador retrievers were surrendered by a family-run breeder from the central part of the state. One of the partners had suddenly passed away, and the remaining person felt overwhelmed and unable to continue the breeding of the dogs on her own.

As of March 3, some of the Labs are still in need of homes. The dogs, aged six-months of age to nine years, require patient adopters because of their special circumstances.

Prior to their surrender, the dogs had not been outside of a kennel environment.

.The dogs include red, yellow, chocolate, and black Labs. They are all reported to be in good physical condition, but many are shy and unsure. Their world has been relatively small; they have only known their immediate family and littermates.

The dogs are slowly learning about things like meeting new people, exploring new environments and walking on leash.

The rescue organization is looking for patient adopters who will be employing positive behavioral reinforcement to train the dogs. The dogs also need time and guidance in order to build their self-confidence.

Slowly exposing the dogs to new experiences with supportive homes can help the dogs learn the world is much wider than their kennels had been. Many would do especially well with a friendly, confident role-model dog in the home, although a few of them would prefer to be the only pet.
The dogs are currently at the Salem and Methuen Adoption Centers. Some are available now, and others will be ready in the coming days.
