A homeowner from Tillamook, Oregon credits his 9-week-old kitten, Fred, with saving his life by waking him up as his house broke out in flames one week ago.
Donald VanWormer told fire department officers his kitten woke him up so he was able to escape.
Rowing, scratching on me, freaking out. I looked up, and the flames were already through the whole attic…
The family had adopted Fred shortly before the fire, and VanWormer knew this had been a very smart and lucky kitten from the day he brought him home. He had hoped the two would spend many years together.
VanWormer crawled out of the house suffering burns to his chest and his face. The fire was caused by dehumidifier. His girlfriend and daughter were not home at the time of the fire.
Tragically, Fred did not survive.

Damages to the family home have been catastrophic. At least he’s alive.
Rest in peace Fred.
VanWormer is now fundraising to rebuild.
