How does a 13-week-old puppy found on the side of the road of a busy street and taken to Miami Dade Animal Services even have a chance to grow up and become a treasured companion for a family?

The shelter has named him Spike,(A2756941) and the notice to end the puppy’s life by humane anesthesia because he was injured and has not been rescued, has been posted at the overcrowded shelter. But Spike is just a puppy.

The puppy qualifies for SUN program under category D-2, X-rays included. He has displayed pelvic limbs weakness. He also has road rash lesions on the inner part of his left hock. He is ambulatory on all four limbs (weakness on pelvic limbs noticed) Shelter notes indicate Spike will need surgery.
- Urgency: D2 classification implies a critical, often time-sensitive situation, with a 5-day deadline before the animal’s, or puppy’s, pathway is determined, which may include euthanasia.
- Medical Care: The program helps cover, or provides incentive for, the high cost of veterinary treatment for injuries like tibia or fibula fractures, ensuring the pet receives necessary care.
- Rescue Requirement: These pets require experienced rescue groups to provide immediate foster/medical care.
