Two dogs are alive and recuperating today because two hero police officers, along with fire department rescuers and animal control agents, risked their own lives to save the dogs that had fallen through the ice at Dale Ridge Ponds in Coeburn, Virginia.

According to the Coeburn Police Department, it had been on Friday when Officers Dale Gross and Brandon Meade responded to a call about two dogs that had fallen through the ice. By the time the officers arrived, the dogs had become exhausted trying to get out of the freezing pond and were seen struggling to keep their heads above the water. It had quickly become a life or death situation for the two canines.

The officers removed their essential gear and made the plunge into the frigid waters to rescue the dogs. Struggling and near death, both dogs were successfully rescued just in time.

The officers, without any hesitation, risked their own lives to rescue the dogs and carry them to safety.

We commend the quick response and effort of Officers Gross and Meade.

We also appreciate the assistance of the Coeburn Fire Department and the Wise County Animal Control. Following the rescue, the dogs were placed in the care of Wise County Animal Control for care.

There has not been any information confirming if the dogs have been reunited with an owner or if they will be placed for adoption. At the time of the rescue, it was unclear if the dogs were strays or had escaped from a nearby home.

Please stop by the Coeburn Police Department Facebook page and give these brave and compassionate officers a few well deserved “ataboys.”
