At the Corridor Rescue in Magnolia, Texas, a shepherd/Doberman blend had been an abandoned puppy. He was found starving in a park next to his sister. The female puppy was adopted quickly, but no one stepped forward for her sibling.
For months of his early life, the friendly puppy waited at the shelter watching potential families say, “hi and goodbye.” Despite the disappointments, the puppy never lost his zest for life and relied on the kindness of the staff and volunteers to learn and play.
And then something happened; it was to become a perfect day. A kind man named Desmond welcomed the puppy into his home. The young man called his dog Desmond Junior. Desmond Junior was finally home; he was now safe, loved and part of a family. The two were inseparable; life was great.

Fast forward to Christmas Day, and in a senseless act of violence, Desmond, the dog’s owner lost his life. Friends, family and Desmond Junior were left heartbroken.

Fortunately, Desmond’s close friend and coworker, Evelyn had learned all about the dog from listening to the heartwarming stories the two shared. Desmond Junior had been returned to the shelter, and there he was – alone, confused and grieving. Evelyn reached out to the shelter and applied to adopt him. She would give Desmond Junior the love and security he lost when his owner died.

Today, Desmond is home again. He is surrounded by love, comfort and someone who understands just how special he is. While he will always carry the love of the man who first chose him, he now has a new chapter with Evelyn; filled with healing, companionship, and hope.

So many unknown heroes have stepped forward, and unless someone tells us about these angels, we frequently have not had the privilege to have met them. She can’t help but celebrate these precious moments. Even with tragedy, life goes on, and with the ability to step forward, we can find happiness.
Our hearts go out to Desmond’s family and friends who, through their grief, still chose to check on Desmond Junior and offer him a safe place to heal.
Rest easy Desmond, your memory and compassion will live on forever.
