Heartbreaking update: Six month old puppy left in crate under bridge too weak to survive -2 people charged

On Monday night, the City of Erie Police contacted ANNA Animal Shelter in Erie, Pennsylvania, about a dog found in a crate under a bridge. Authorities were unsure if the dog, who appeared to have been frozen, was even still alive.

Immediately, staff members from the shelter arrived at the location and confirmed the dog was still alive but nonresponsive.  At the time of her arrival at the emergency veterinarian hospital, the six-month-old red Siberian Husky’s temperature was 94 degrees and her heart rate an alarming 46 BPM. She had been covered in feces, was frostbitten on her four paws and smelled of urine.

Although rescuers knew Aimee had a extraordinary uphill battle, the puppy fought hard. Two days later she took a few wobbly steps, but every tiny effort was celebrated as a major improvement.

Earlier today, however Aimee was transported to a specialty hospital after a set back in her recovery. Aimee needed lifesaving surgery to try and save her intestines. The surgeon warned rescuers of the seriousness of the surgery, but without it, she would not have any chance to survive.

We have no choice but to take this chance. She has fought so hard and has been so sweet despite all of the torture she has been through. Life has been so unfair to her – she deserves so much more. She needs us and you now more than ever. We’re all praying and sending her so much love and support …

Tragically, Aimee was not strong enough to continue. Her body was just too weak. Late this afternoon Aimee passed away.

Two people are now facing animal cruelty charges. They have been identified as Scott Bayle, 23 and Tori Jackna,26. A warrant had been served yesterday leading to the arrest. Strangely enough, shortly after the arrest of the two suspects, the shelter posted the update that Aimee had gone into cardiac arrest and died.

The ANNA group posted the following on their Facebook page:

It was as if she knew .. she knew they were caught… they weren’t going to get away with the torture, pain, abuse and suffering they had caused her.

We must all take comfort that Aimee knew she was loved. She heard soft voices, received tender strokes and had a soft comfortable bed with lots of love and care.

she also knew her body couldn’t recover..she had suffered too long and it was time for her to go to heaven where she could feel etermal peace and constant love..

Rest in peace Aimee. Many thanks to everyone who sent words of encouragement, donated and shared her story. Our hearts may have been broken, but Aimee will never be forgotten and has definitely left pawprints on our hearts.
