In Desoto Parish, Louisiana, an 86-year-old man and his dog died last week as winter storm Fern impacted much of the country.

Alvin Mayweather was discovered in his trailer early Monday morning; a generator was found in the garage, and it is believed the generator had been too close to the home. The cause of death was carbon monoxide poisoning.

This tragic incident highlights carbon monoxide poisoning as a “silent killer” when used in confined places during inclement weather in unventilated areas such as trailers and campers.

Family members said Mayweather’s birthday celebration as he turned 87 had been planned.

Symptoms in pets suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning include irritability, anxiety, lethargy, vomiting and staggering. Immediately remove the pet from the home and provide fresh air; transport the pet to a veterinarian for life saving treatment.

Please everyone – we know how cold it is, but please use appropriate heaters, make sure they are well ventilated and install carbon monoxide detectors. Stay safe.
