An injured dog was rescued early Sunday morning after fleeing during a bathroom break along the New Jersey Turnpike the night before.
A nine-year-old golden retriever, Abbie, had been on her way to a new home on a transport vehicle from South Carolina’s Final Victory Animal Rescue; stopping at a rest stop in East Brunswick, New Jersey. She had been heading to her new home in Maine.

Abbie had been equipped with a tracking tag which the Unmanned Search and Rescue (U.S.A.R.) drone team had enabled rescuers to locate the dog and transport her to safety with the help of the Woodbridge Township Police Department. Abbie was found in a wooded area about 15 miles from where she initially escaped.

When Abbie was rescued, she was cold and afraid of the team as they slowly approached her.

Abbie is currently at Tri-State Veterinary Hospital in Woodbridge, NJ. She has an injury to her hip and some road rash. She has been evaluated by additional veterinarians and will likely need surgery.
In a post on social media from Final Victory Animal Rescue, Maine is no longer in the dog’s future. She has been returned to South Carolina and has been adopted by the family who had been fostering her.

She is safely back in SC and has been adopted by her loving fosters here in Columbia, where she awaits surgery for her injury.
Abbie has been adopted by her fosters in South Carolina and is recovering from her wild adventure.
