In Fayette County, Pennsylvania, a frightened deer slipped on the ice at a pond and didn’t know how to get back on its feet and onto solid ground beneath the snow.
An employee, Chris Guty, of JCS LLC, a waste management company, had been working in the area when he spotted a young deer splayed out on the ice and unable to move. The employee called his boss, Jim Collins, telling his boss he was preparing to venture out onto the ice to help the deer. Collins didn’t want to take a chance his employee could be injured, so instead he insisted he would rescue the deer.
Today while picking garbage for JCS, LLC I saw this deer stuck on a frozen creek exhausted and sure to die. I called Jim to tell him I was going down to try and save it. I told him where i was and he said no!!! I don’t want you risking yourself. I’ll come do it. so he came out of his way climbed down an 80 foot cliff covered in a foot of ice and snow shuffled across a 50 foot wide frozen creek and saved this deer‘s life. Erica Collins your husband is such a great man!
Collins, an experienced ice fisherman, made his way to the location and climbed down an 80-foot embankment to reach the deer. It’s back legs were splayed out wide, and the deer was not able to stand up and regain its balance at the Redstone Creek in Grindstone.

Collin tried to push the deer with his leg across the ice towards the embankment, but it was too frightened to even budge. When Collins stepped through the thin ice at that point, he didn’t want the ice to break anymore and bent down, picked the deer off the ice and placed it on the ground.
The deer initially couldn’t regain its balance, but within minutes started to feel more confident while it slowly secured its footing; within moments it stood and ran away.
And let’s not overlook the deer looking back at her rescuer as if to say thank you. One person commenting on Collins’ Facebook page made sure everyone knew how kindness really does matter:
The deer even looked back as if to say THANK YOU!! Just another example of the kind of people I’m proud to call friends!!!
