Former owners ‘reason for surrender’ blank on pet history forms but shelter felt their heartbreaking separation

At the Friends of Anne Arundel County Animals, volunteers and staff sadly relay to the public that not a day goes by without multiple people entering the shelter to surrender their pets. Because Anne Arundel County Animal Services is an open shelter, all pets are accepted without charge.

A pet owner wishing to make a surrender is requested to make an appointment in order to make the procedure more efficient. At this time, there are no more kennel cages available, and appointments to surrender are filled up for a month.

After being involved in pet rescue, owner-stated reasons seem to move in the same direction. There are families moving and can’t take their pet, finances, owner health, and in one case cited by a “callous owner” that they were “tired of it.” Lives of both pets and owners and the complicated reasons for surrender are so often summed up in just a few words.

On February 5, Leia, 4 and Sky, 10, were surrendered together. Leia was adopted by the family when she was a puppy, and Sky had been adopted from the shelter when she was only two years old. According to the owners, the dogs lived with young children, were crated at night, are house trained and have no anxieties when left alone. Both dogs enjoy playing with squeaky toys; the two seem like great pups to have around the home, wouldn’t you agree?

In this heartbreaking case, it is firmly believed the former owner still cares deeply for the two dogs. Both dogs are spayed and their adoption fees have been paid.

A few days after they arrived at the shelter, an unidentified person delivered two large bags of toys, one for each of the two dogs, and a 40-pound bag of kibble for each dog. Each bag of new toys included a used slow feeder, and the woman dropping the supplies off directed which feeder was for Leia and which one for Sky. She asked the toys and foods to be given to the family who adopts each dog, and then quickly left the shelter.

Neither Leia or Skye have been adopted at this time, and we would love and encourage everyone to share their stories. They do not have to be adopted together.

Sharing saves lives.

Many thanks to the Friends of Anne Arundel County Animal Shelters introducing us to Leia and Skye, and we hope we can help these two sweethearts find their “furever homes.”
