Firefighters rescue dog dangerously clinging onto waterfall’s edge

In Patterson, New York a 14-month-old puppy made headline news after falling 15 feet down a cliff near the Quaker Brook Waterfall in the Michael Ciaiola Conservation Area on March 8, 2026.

The dog, named Rudy had become trapped on a small rock, just inches from the rushing waterfall.

Patterson Fire Department responded in the morning and first had to plow through a mile-long path through snow and ice-covered trails to reach the dog. Additional assistance had been called from the Putnam County Technical Rescue Team and the Putnam Lake and Brewster firefighters.

Using rope rescue equipment and for a total of two hours, a firefighter was lowered down the cliff to reach the dog. Rudy was safely brought back up the cliff uninjured.

No doubt Rudy was extremely grateful and wasted no time jumping into Captain Greco’s lap with lots of sloppy wet kisses.

Rudy and his owner were reunited, and we are all thankful for the bravery and kindness our firefighters and rescue personnel so often carry out saving lives.
