Many thanks to the Sky Valley Fire Department located in Gold Bar, Washington this week for rescuing a total of six unresponsive puppies thought to have been suffering from a suspected fentanyl overdose.

On January 11, three unresponsive, 10-week-old puppies were brought to Station 54 where they had been in critical condition with respiratory arrests. Firefighters recognized that the symptoms affecting all three puppies had to be caused by environmental poisoning of an unknown kind.

Crews immediately began performing CPR along with oxygen therapy and administered Narcan; since Fentanyl is one of the major causes of poisoning when inhaled as a powder. Experienced firefighters suspected the Fentanyl overdose.

The three puppies responded to the treatment and were resuscitated.

Sheriff deputies arrived at the home where the three puppies had been living and found three more very sick puppies; they were then rushed to Fire Station 54 where firefighter-EMTs treated those pups with the same emergency medical protocols.

All six puppies were then transported to an urgent care veterinary clinic, and they were all reported to be recovering. According to the Everett Animal Shelter where all the puppies are now being cared for, they are part of an investigation and not available for adoption yet. The puppies still require significant time, medical care and resources to heal and grow.
